FrenchPathway — FAQ

Everything people ask before starting: what level you need, whether it's for TCF or TEF, what's in the free trial, and what it takes to hit your immigration target.

Getting started

Do I need to be at a certain level to start?

No — you can start at any level. Mock tests are the final stage of prep, not the starting point, so don't worry if you're not ready for a full timed mock yet.

Begin with the tools built for building up: Le Plan (your day-by-day study schedule), the study material (vocab, grammar, common mistakes, exam strategy), and the daily practice games Le Mot du Jour and La Chaîne. When you're consistently comfortable, switch to mock tests and exam mode. The mocks don't expire — they'll be there when you're ready.

Is FrenchPathway for the TCF or the TEF Canada?

Both. The TCF and TEF Canada test the same four skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking) and convert to the same NCLC/CLB scale. So practising here builds the exact abilities both tests measure.

Even where practice is TCF-flavoured, it carries straight over to the TEF — the only TEF-specific thing is getting used to its slightly different question format, which you polish closer to test day. See our TCF vs TEF comparison.

Which test should I take — TCF or TEF Canada?

Neither is universally easier, and both are accepted by IRCC and convert to the same NCLC levels. The real tie-breaker is which test has centres and dates available near you sooner. If it's a tie, pick either and practise that format consistently. Full breakdown in our TCF vs TEF guide.

What's included in the free trial?

Levels & immigration

What level do I need for Express Entry?

Aim for NCLC 7 or higher in all four skills. Combined with your English level, French can add up to 50 CRS points, and it qualifies you for French-category draws, which have had much lower cut-offs than general draws. More in our TCF guide.

What level do I need for the C16 work permit?

Generally NCLC 5 in oral skills — listening and speaking only. No reading or writing test is required for the language threshold, which makes C16 a much faster target than full Express Entry. More in our C16 section.

How long will it take me to prepare?

It depends on your starting level and target. Reaching NCLC 5 oral (C16) can take a few weeks of focused practice; reaching NCLC 7 in all four skills (Express Entry) is a longer, hours-based effort. Le Plan gives you an honest, personalized estimate based on your goal and how many hours a day you can study.

Can I really reach my target with an app?

For listening, reading, and writing — yes, focused practice gets you there. For NCLC 7 speaking, you also need real conversation practice with a person; no app fully replaces that, and we'll tell you so honestly rather than pretend otherwise. Le Plan builds that reminder into your schedule.

Using the platform

Do the mock tests expire if I use them later?

No. Start with the study plan and material now, build your level, and take the mock tests whenever you're ready. They'll be waiting.

Is my progress saved? Can I use it on more than one device?

Your progress is saved as you go. On a paid plan, your progress and study plan sync across devices, so you can start on your phone and continue on your laptop.

Is there an app I can install?

Yes — FrenchPathway installs to your phone or computer's home screen like a real app (it opens full-screen, no browser bar, and works offline for pages you've visited). Just tap “Get the app” on the site and follow the steps for your device.

Is there a guarantee?

Yes — plans come with a 7-day refund guarantee, and checkout is handled securely through Stripe. You can also start free first and upgrade only when you're ready.
