How Many CRS Points Is NCLC 7 Worth?

NCLC 7 in all four French skills earns a bonus of 25 or 50 CRS points, depending on your English level, on top of the core language points your French scores already give you.

So, how many CRS points is NCLC 7 worth? The answer has two parts. The first is a fixed bonus: +25 points if your English is CLB 4 or lower, or +50 points if your English is CLB 5 or higher. The second is the core language points that any official-language result earns, which depend on your profile and are best calculated with IRCC's own tool.

The bonus: 25 or 50 points

The bonus is tied to one condition: NCLC 7 or higher in all four skills (listening, speaking, reading and writing) on an accepted test such as the TCF Canada or TEF Canada. What you get then depends on your English:

FrenchEnglishBonus
NCLC 7+ in all fourCLB 4 or lower (or no English test)+25
NCLC 7+ in all fourCLB 5 or higher in all four+50

If one French skill lands at NCLC 6, you lose the bonus entirely. That all-or-nothing edge is why the target is NCLC 7 in every skill, with some margin.

The core language points

Separately from the bonus, your French results are scored under the core language section of the Comprehensive Ranking System. If French is your first official language, each skill earns points by level. If French is your second official language (you also have English results), it earns a smaller amount. The exact numbers depend on whether you apply alone or with a spouse, and IRCC can change them, so we do not list a table here. Use the official CRS tool on canada.ca to see your exact total.

Two simple examples

Both examples use the bonus figures only. Your final score also depends on age, education, work experience and other factors.

Not just points: NCLC 7 is also the usual threshold for French-language category draws, which have often had lower cut-offs than general draws. Whether one is held is up to IRCC, so check the latest round results.

What to do next

  1. Get a baseline. Take a timed practice set in each of the four skills and see which one is weakest.
  2. Check the conversion. Look up the score you need per skill for NCLC 7 on the current IRCC chart, then add a buffer.
  3. Fix the weakest skill first. One section below NCLC 7 cancels the bonus, so uneven profiles need balancing before polishing the strongest skill.
  4. Book only when consistent. Sit the real test when your practice results stay at target across several attempts.

Frequently asked questions

How many CRS points is NCLC 7 worth?

NCLC 7 in all four French skills earns a bonus of 25 CRS points if your English is CLB 4 or lower, or 50 points if your English is CLB 5 or higher. Your French results also earn core language points, which vary by profile. Confirm current values with the official IRCC CRS tool.

Do I need NCLC 7 in all four skills for the bonus?

Yes. The French bonus requires NCLC 7 or higher in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Reaching NCLC 7 in three skills and NCLC 6 in the fourth does not qualify for the bonus.

Is NCLC 7 the same as CLB 7?

They are parallel scales. NCLC is the French-language benchmark and CLB is the English one, and level 7 on each is meant to describe a comparable ability. IRCC publishes the official score equivalencies for TCF Canada and TEF Canada.

Is it worth going higher than NCLC 7?

Higher levels can add more core language points, so yes it can help, but the large step in the bonus happens at NCLC 7. Aim a little above the minimum so one weak section does not drop you below it.
